Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Plate: What It Is & When to Choose It
A hot rolled stainless steel plate is a flat product rolled at high temperature, above roughly 1,100°C, where the steel stays soft enough to form thick sections in one pass. The result is a plate with a matte, slightly rough surface (called No.1 after pickling) and a thickness range that cold rolling simply cannot reach. Most buyers turn to it when they need material 3 mm and up, at lower cost, for structures and equipment where the surface look is secondary to strength and corrosion resistance.

What “Hot Rolled” Actually Means (and Why “Plate,” Not “Sheet”)
Stainless starts as a slab, gets heated past its recrystallization point, then runs through a roughing and finishing stand to the target thickness. Because it is worked hot, the mill can make it thick and wide without the steel fighting back. After rolling, the scale is removed by pickling, leaving the characteristic No.1 finish: a dull, grey, matte face.
The “plate vs sheet” split is mostly about thickness. In stainless, anything delivered as individual flat pieces in the medium-to-heavy range (roughly 3 mm and above) is called plate. Thin, coil-derived flat product under about 3–6 mm is sheet. So a 10 mm stainless flat is a hot rolled plate; a 1.2 mm bright 2B panel is a cold rolled sheet. The two are not interchangeable, and the rest of this article explains why.

This is the question every purchaser asks, and the answer decides cost, lead time and whether the part will even fit. The table below contrasts the two on the points that matter in real projects.

Pick hot rolled when thickness is non-negotiable, cosmetics do not matter, and you want to keep cost down. Pick cold rolled when the surface is seen, tolerances are tight, or the gauge is under 3 mm. In the 3–6 mm overlap, base the call on finish and tolerance, not size.

For most structural and tank work, 304 stainless steel sheet grade (delivered as plate) is the default. Step up to 316 stainless steel sheet / 316L when chlorides or chemicals are in play. The 430 stainless steel sheet grade is the low-cost ferritic option for dry indoor use.
Surface Finish: No.1 and What Comes After
Hot rolled plate ships in No.1 as standard: hot rolled, annealed and pickled. It is matte grey, not reflective, and that is fine for most structural and industrial jobs. If the finished part will be visible or need to meet a hygiene spec, the plate gets further treatment after fabrication, not before:
- 2D — cold rolled, annealed, pickled; dull, soft surface.
- 2B — 2D plus a skin pass; smoother grey, the most common cold rolled finish.
- No.4 / HL — brushed, for visible architectural or food surfaces.
- Pickling and passivation — applied to welds and the whole fabricated structure to restore the passive layer.
Starting with No.1 plate avoids paying for a surface finish that welding and assembly will destroy anyway. Many tanks and vessels are pickled and passivated as a complete unit at the end.

- Lower cost per kilogram. Fewer rolling and finishing steps than cold rolled material.
- Easy to fabricate. Cuts, welds, bends and machines well in the annealed condition.
- Good weldability. Especially the L grades (304L, 316L), which avoid sensitization at the seam.
- Structural strength. High yield and toughness for load-bearing and pressure parts.
- Mill-direct supply. We roll it ourselves, so lead times and pricing stay under our control.
